This morning I ran the 2nd Annual CGRC Empower the Children 5K in Havertown. My cousin used to work for the Child Guidance Resource Centers and she helped plan the inaugural 5K last year. (She recently started a new job, but I had already signed up for the race!)

I headed out a little before 8:00 am and drove down the Blue Route to Havertown. The race begins at a park in the neighborhood my uncle lives in, so I parked outside his house and walked a few blocks to get my bib and t-shirt. I had a good 40 minutes before the 5K, so I walked back to put the stuff in my car.

Uncle Tom came home from a coffee run so he invited me to come in for a few minutes. We chatted about school stuff and then I headed back to the park for the race.

The course was the same as last year: two HILLY loops. The course is constantly up and down with a HUGE downhill towards the beginning of the loop and a long, gradual uphill at the end of the loop. There is a water stop in the back of the loop, but I bypassed it both times.

By the second lap the group had spread out and there was a fairly large gap behind me. I kept chugging along, willing myself to keep running up those hills. A young girl caught me on the final uphill, but I picked off a guy at the last turn.

The girl was a little ahead of me and someone shouted "Sprint in to break 30!" I could see the finish line and the clock, and with 12 seconds to go I started sprinting. It was still slightly uphill and after about 5 seconds I realized I wouldn't be able to break 30:00. I backed off a bit since I was hurting from running up that last hill!

I finished in 30:06 which I was happy with since the course was so hilly AND I had left my GPS watch so I had no idea how fast I was running. I came in 47 out of 93 finishers overall and 8th out of 16 females ages 20-29.

I've finished 4 of my goal of 14 races in 2014 and I have two next weekend and then Broad Street in two weeks!!
